Coast Guard Tops Volleyball
NEW LONDON, Conn. - Coast Guard hit 29.6 percent in a season-opening 3-0 win over Mitchell College on Tuesday night.
The Bears won by game scores of 25-16, 25-10, 25-10 to give first-year head coach Mike Bynon his first career victory. It also marked the first meeting between the two New London schools since 2010. Coast Guard is now 7-0 all-time against the Mariners.
In the opening game, Coast Guard scored the first eight points and led 13-2. Mitchell closed the gap to 15-9, causing the Bears to call timeout. Out of the timeout, Coast Guard scored five of the next six points for a 20-10 advantage. Mitchell later scored five straight to cut the deficit to 21-16 before Coast Guard ripped off the final four points for a 25-16 win.
The Bears jumped out to a 9-2 edge in game two. With Coast Guard leading 13-8, the Bears ran off 11 straight points en route to a 25-10 win.
Coast Guard closed out the match with a 25-10 win in the third game. Again it was a quick start as the Bears scored the first six points and led 9-1 en route to victory.
Ashley Dumont led the Bears with seven kills while Susan West and Stephanie Bullard each added five in the win. Emily Gilland finished with 11 digs while Madison Scott had a team-high five blocks for the Bears.
Senior Amanda Garcia had a match-high 10 kills while classmate Kaisea Caramante led the way with 11 digs for the Mariners.
Mitchell will next host Albertus Magnus College on Saturday, September 5 at noon.
