Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Conn College


NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision (25-13, 25-15, 25-17) to Connecticut College on Monday night in non-conference action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Conn hit .215 as a team and held a commanding 21-3 edge in service aces, with seven players chipping in with at least two. Quinlan Low posted a match-high seven kills and added nine digs while Sam Hunter and Maddie Rust each contributed six kills. Grace McGee played the final two sets and finished with 12 assists.

The Mariners hit .185 as a squad and posted six blocks. Janelle Rice led Mitchell with five kills and seven assists while Colby Zitoli recorded a team-high eight digs.

In the opening set, Conn led 7-6 until a 7-0 run broke things open. Belinda Mullally and Rust each had a pair of kills during the spurt while Ella Johnson tacked on two aces. The Camels later padded the lead to as many as 12 following a pair of aces from Rust and snapped up a 1-0 advantage following a Mitchell service error.

Hunter served Conn out to a big lead in the second set. The Camels were up 9-4 when she stepped to the line and handed out four straight aces, and by the time she was done the margin had expanded to 16-5. She also had four kills in the set, including the clincher that put Conn up 2-0 in the match.

The third set was tight until Conn pulled away midway through the stanza, winning 10 of 13 points to lead 22-13. The final points of the match came on a kill by Alex McDevitt and block assists from Rust and Mullally.

Mullally led all players with five aces while Hunter and Rust added four apiece. 

Mitchell (3-11 overall) will next play at Lesley University on Wednesday, October 12 at 8 p.m. Conn College (9-7 overall) returns to action at Trinity College on Friday, October 14 at 7 p.m.
