Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision at Conn

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Connecticut College on Wednesday night in a non-conference showdown at Luce Field House.

The Camels (10-6 overall) won by set scores of 25-6, 25-18 and 25-24 as Emma Hewlin supplied a match-high 10 kills.

Myia Williams led the Mariners with five kills while Laurissa Amaker had four and Marissa Sweeney added three. Williams also finished with 10 digs to record a double-double and also chipped in with three service aces.

Grace McGee helped the Camels roll out to a 5-0 advantage by recording three aces and setting up Maddie Rust for a kill over the first five rallies. Sam Hunter extended the margin to twin figures at 14-4 by adding an ace, and Hewlin got red hot down the stretch to finish four passes from McGee to give the hosts a lopsided 25-6 win.

Mitchell came out stronger in the second half and took a 10-6 lead on a Camel attacking error that forced the hosts to take a timeout. After the break, Conn started firing from all cylinders and regained the lead at 13-11 by getting three aces in a row from Rust. The Mariners never threatened the rest of the frame, and Rust finished the set by smashing a kill on the final play.

Conn jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set, which was capped by a kill off the hand of Juliet Levesque during the early stretch, and appeared to be in control by going ahead by as many as eight as the frame progressed. The Mariners, however, recovered and gave the Camels a big scare by tying the score at 24-all on an attack error to prolong the set even further. But despite nearly surrendering the lead, the hosts scored the next two points and ended the match on an ace by McKaela Simons.

Mitchell (0-14 overall) returns to conference action at home against Dean College on Saturday, October 14 at noon.
