Volleyball Loses NECC Showdown with Southern Vermont

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Southern Vermont College on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

The Mountaineers won all three sets by scores of 25-15 to improve to 13-2 overall (3-0 NECC). Liv Sowles finished with a match-high 24 kills and added 10 digs to record a double-double. Nikki Ramirez contributed nine kills and 11 digs as SVC hit .278 as a squad on the day.

Ariana Carter paced Mitchell with six kills and Laurissa Amaker added five. Shyla Phillips-Krick chipped in a match-high 19 digs while Amaker and Courtney Cappabianca added 10 apiece.

Sowles got the Mountaineers off to a great start in the opening set, providing kills on four of her team's first five points. She finished with seven in the set as SVC never trailed en route to the early 1-0 lead.

Southern Vermont scored six of the first seven points in the second set to quickly seize control. Sowles once again led the way with eight kills while Ramirez added four.

The final set was close in the early stages as the teams traded blows. The score was tied at 9-9 when Southern Vermont finally pulled away behind a 12-1 run that included five kills by Sowles, who finished with nine in the frame.

Mitchell (0-9 overall, 0-2 NECC) will next host Connecticut College on Tuesday, October 2 at 7 p.m. Southern Vermont returns to action at SUNY Cobleskill on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
