Volleyball Claims First Win at Lesley

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team earned its first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon by a 3-1 final over Lesley University in New England Collegiate Conference action at Medford High School.

The Mariners won by set scores of 25-19, 18-25, 25-22 and 25-19 to improve to 1-11 overall (1-2 NECC). The result also gave head coach Drew Schaeffer his first career victory at the collegiate level.

Nikki Gerald paced the Mariners with a career-high 11 kills and hit .435 for the match. Laurissa Amaker and Ariana Carter added eight and seven kills, respectively, while Cameron Childs contributed 23 assists and a match-high seven service aces. Shyla Phillips-Krick chipped in a match-high 17 digs while Amaker finished with 14.

In the opening set, an early 6-0 run spotted Mitchell a 9-3 lead that it maintained en route to a 1-0 advantage. However, the Lynx bounced back in the second set to knot things up at 1-1.

The duo of Childs and Carter carried the Mariners at the start of the third set. Childs contributed three aces while Carter recorded back-to-back kills during a 6-0 stretch that put Mitchell on top. Later on it was Gerald and Amaker who combined for three kills that wrapped up the set and put the Mariners in front 2-1.

Childs served for seven straight points to open the fourth set as Mitchell raced out to an 8-0 advantage. Amaker and Gerald each finished with a pair of kills in the frame as the Mariners coasted to the finish.

Mitchell will next host Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday, October 9 at 7 p.m.
