Volleyball Falls in Four at Delhi

DELHI, N.Y. -- The Mitchell College women's volleyball team lost to SUNY Delhi, 3-1, Thursday night at Floyd L. Maines Arena.

The Mariners took the opening set by a 25-17 final before dropping the next three by closely-contested scores of 27-25, 25-22 and 25-22. Olivia DeLoach and Ariana Carter paced the visitors with season highs of 13 and 11 kills, respectively, while Lexi Hubbard handed out 39 assists, her highest total of the year. Cameron Childs contributed a match-high 30 digs, one of five Mitchell players who finished in double digits in the category.

Mitchell scored six straight points to grab a 6-1 lead in the first set and led by as many as 10 in the stanza. A kill by Carter brought up set point, and a service error by Delhi put Mitchell up 1-0 in the early going. In the second set, Mitchell trailed 24-23 before back-to-back kills by Laurissa Amaker provided a chance to go up 2-0 in the match. However, Delhi responded with a pair of kills and a service ace to steal the set and even the match at 1-1.

Neither side led by more than four points in the third set, with Delhi taking control by ripping off four straight points to break an 18-18 tie. The Mariners eventually whittled the deficit back to two, but Witchney Clersainvil provided the set-clinching kill to put the Broncos up 2-1.

In the final set, Mitchell's biggest lead came at 17-11 before Delhi clawed back into the game. The Broncos rallied for six straight points to tie the score, and later won eight of the final nine points to claim the match. Clersainvil finished with a match-high 20 kills to pace Delhi.

Mitchell (5-6 overall) returns to conference play against Lesley University on Saturday, September 28 at 2 p.m. The game will be the home opener for the Mariners, who started the year with 11 straight games on the road.
