Volleyball tops Fisher in Four

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 victory over Fisher College on Wednesday night in non-conference action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Mitchell triumphed by set scores of 26-24, 13-25, 25-21 and 25-11. The win also gave the Mariners (10-9 overall) double-digit victories for the first time since the 2006 season.

Brianna Ley paced Mitchell with eight kills and a team-high 14 digs while Olivia DeLoach added seven kills and 10 digs in only two sets of work.

Fisher's Cynthia Huerta led all players with 22 of her team's 33 kills and also tallied a match-high 19 digs. Katherine Rodriguez finished with a match-high 28 assists.

Mitchell trailed 24-21 in the opening set before storming back with five straight points to clinch the stanza. Lexy Hanes provided the kill that brought the Mariners to set point, and an attack error by Huerta completed the comeback.

The Falcons responded by jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the second set. Fisher led by as many as 13 en route to evening the match at 1-1, with Huerta contributing seven kills during the set.

The Mariners came out on top in a tight third set to go up 2-1. The turning point came when DeLoach served for three straight points to build a 21-16 advantage. In the final set, Mitchell never trailed as Ley and DeLoach combined for seven of the team's nine kills.

Mitchell will next host Bay Path University on Tuesday, October 22 at 7 p.m. Fisher (8-13 overall) returns to action at Pine Manor College on Monday, October 21 at 6 p.m.
