Volleyball Grabs Fourth Seed for NECC Championship

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Following a historic regular season in which it tied the school's Division III record for wins, the Mitchell College women's volleyball team has earned the fourth seed for the 2019 New England Collegiate Conference Championship.

Mitchell, which will make its seventh appearance in the tournament, will host fifth-seeded Becker College in the first round on Tuesday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. It marks the first time in the 12-year history of the league that the Mariners will host a tournament game, and the fourth seed is also the highest ever attained by the program.

The winner of Tuesday's game advances to the semifinals and will play at top-seeded Eastern Nazarene College on November 8. The title game will take place on November 10 at the site of the highest remaining seed.

Mitchell and Becker recently faced off during the regular season, with the Mariners capturing a competitive 3-0 victory on October 29 to lock up the fourth seed. The Hawks enter the tournament with an overall record of 10-15 (3-4 NECC).

The Mariners (13-11 overall, 4-3 NECC) are guaranteed their first-ever winning season since joining the DIII ranks. Second-year head coach Drew Schaeffer and his squad have won 10 more games than last season and have tied the 2006 team for most wins in a single season.
