Volleyball Blanked by WestConn

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 non-conference setback against Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

WestConn won by set scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-11 to improve to 16-7 overall. Mitchell dropped to 6-14 on the year.

Victoria Alomar and Abbi Debes each recorded nine kills to pace the Colonials. Alomar also added 10 digs, and Rory McMaster handed out a match-high 30 assists. WestConn hit .367 as a team and finished with 43 kills in 90 attempts.

Olivia DeLoach paced Mitchell with seven kills and eight digs while Jade Cain tacked on seven kills and a block. Sarah Aviles and Bree Rudolph chipped in three kills each.

WestConn took its biggest lead of the opening set at 20-11 and looked poised to close out the set. However, Mitchell used a 10-3 spurt to claw back to within 23-21, with DeLoach supplying a pair of kills in the stretch. The Colonials weathered the storm and took the set on a pair of errors.

The second set was deadlocked at 13-13 when Alomar served WestConn to four straight points, forcing the Mariners to take a time out. Mitchell responded with three points out of the break to pull within one, but never got any closer. Alomar contributed three kills in the final stages of the set as the visitors secured a 2-0 lead.

WestConn started the final set with five straight points on the serve of Skylar Kellam and never looked back. The Colonials led by scores of 12-2 and 18-3 en route to the runaway finish. 

Mitchell will wrap up regular season play with a road match at Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday, October 30 at 1 p.m.
