Volleyball Falters Against JWU

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team was dealt a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday night in a GNAC match at the Yarnall Athletic Center. The Wildcats withstood a strong push by the Mariners to take the opening set 26-24, then were able to pull out set victories of 25-16 and 25-20 to close the door.

Mitchell junior Allison Blum (Garden Grove, Cali.) led the offensive charge for the home team finishing with 12 kills and 12 defensive digs. It marks the fourth consecutive game that Blum has recorded double-digit kills and double-digit digs. Sophomore Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) racked up a team-best 14 digs for the Mariners, and sophomore Jenna Blankenship (Virden, Ill.) handed out 13 assists, also a team-high figure.

Senior Peyton Oliver led all players with 17 digs to go along with eight digs and four blocks. Sarah Miller added 12 kills and 15 digs for the Wildcats, while Michela Voit dished out a game-high 18 assists.

The Mariners (6-11, 4-6 GNAC) will attempt to right the ship on Saturday, October 14th, when they travel to West Hartford, Connecticut, for a tri-match hosted by the University of Saint Joseph, featuring the host Blue Jays and Colby-Sawyer College. The Wildcats (8-9, 6-1 GNAC) will look to make it three wins in a row when they host Emmanuel College in a conference tit on Friday, October 13th.
