Volleyball Celebrates Senior Day with Sweep of AMCATS

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team celebrated senior day on Saturday afternoon by snapping a three match losing skid, taking down Anna Maria College in straight sets at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

The Mariners won by set scores of 25-12, 25-20, and 25-13, earning just their third three set victory of the season, while improving their GNAC record to 5-8.

Junior Bliss Brown (Rainbow City, Ala.) finished with double-digit kills for the 12th time this fall, finishing with 14 kills, 13 digs, and a pair of service aces. Sophomore Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 16 defensive digs for the Mariners, while senior Julianna Repaci (New Britain, Conn.) collected 13 digs, and sophomore Jenna Blankenship (Virden, Ill.) and senior Hannah O'Brien (Riverside, R.I.) each handed out a team-best eight assists.

Jana Hunt finished the day with four kills to lead the AMCATS. Serena Dennis notched 13 digs, Suzette Scheer 10, and Julia Tarantino had a match-high 10 assists in the loss.

After rolling over Anna Maria in the opening set, the AMCATS battled throughout the second stanza, building a 10-7 lead before Mitchell reeled off two quick points. Not long after, a service error by the Mariners made the score 15-15, but a kill by Brown would put the home squad up on top, where they would remain for the rest of the set. Moments later, another service error trimmed the Mitchell lead to 19-18, but four consecutive points, including a pair of kills by Brown, gave the Mariners breathing room and allowed them to close out the set on a kill by Hannah O'Brien.

The Mariners (7-13, 5-8 GNAC) will return to action on Tuesday, October 24th, when they host crosstown rival Connecticut College in non-conference action at 7:00 pm. The AMCATS (3-20, 0-10 GNAC) resume play on Tuesday, October 24th, with a road non-conference match against Rhode Island College.
