NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team took a pair of games off John Jay College on Saturday afternoon, winning by final scores of 18-3 and 19-3 at Alumni Field.

The Mariners (6-5 overall) exploded for 37 runs on 29 hits and swatted three home runs in the doubleheader. Justin Johnson, Steve Cochrane and Dougie DelaCruz all went deep for the Mariners in support of starting pitchers Jakari Pellegrini and Roland Thivierge.

Mitchell will next host Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday, March 19 at 3:30 p.m. John Jay (5-9 overall) returns to action against the College of New Rochelle on Sunday, March 17 at 11 a.m.

After falling into a 2-0 hole in the top of the first inning, Mitchell answered back with nine runs in the home half and never trailed again. Cochrane and Sam Majewski each provided RBI doubles in the frame while Johnson added a two-run homer and Markus Melendez plated a run with a triple.

Pellegrini settled in after the rough start and didn't allow a hit over the next five innings. He finished the game with eight strikeouts over 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on one hit.

Mitchell, batting as the visiting team, continued to pour it on in the second game. The Mariners put up five runs in the first inning and nine more in the second to vault out to a 14-0 lead.

DelaCruz followed a two-run double by Steven Pagan with a two-run blast to highlight the Mitchell first. In the second inning, Majewski, Anthony Diaz and Cochrane all supplied RBI singles while John Jay's pitching issued three walks, hit four batters and uncorked three wild pitches.

Cochrane's home run came in the fourth inning, one of three hits in the contest for the Mitchell newcomer. Pagan went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI while both Diaz and Melendez finished with a pair of hits.

Thivierge went 4.0 innings to pick up his third win of the season, allowing one run on three hits while fanning four.
