Baseball Wraps Trip with Win over SJC

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Mitchell College baseball team wrapped up its spring trip with a 13-4 victory over Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on Friday morning in the RussMatt Invitational at Chain O'Lakes Park.

Mitchell improved to 5-3 overall and finished 4-0 at the RussMatt Invitational. The Mariners pounded out the 13 runs on a season-high 13 hits, with Dougie DelaCruz and Anthony Diaz supplying three apiece. DelaCruz, who had one of Mitchell's five doubles in the contest, also knocked in a game-high three runs.

Four pitchers combined to keep the Monks off balance in the nine-inning affair. Drew Daley got the starting nod and navigated through three innings before turning the ball over to Connor Dulin, who picked up his second career win with 2.0 innings of relief. Bryce Bedard and Jeff Nicolosi closed out the final 4.0 innings without yielding a run.

The Mariners got on the scoreboard first as DelaCruz singled up the middle to score Anthony Laureano in the first inning. In the second, Jeremy Sagun delivered a two-run double and later scored on a double by Steve Cochrane to make it 4-0.

Saint Joseph's cut the deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the second, but Mitchell answered right back with three in the third. A sacrifice fly by Jeremy Santos highlighted the frame as the Mariners expanded the lead to 7-2.

The Monks put up single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull within 7-4. However, Saint Joseph's struggled to put runners in scoring position the rest of the way. Bedard allowed leadoff singles in both the sixth and seventh innings but got the next batter to ground into double plays each time.

Mitchell tacked on runs in each of the final four innings to pad the lead. DelaCruz doubled home a pair of runs in the sixth while Diaz plated a run in the eighth with a two-bagger. The Mariners also scored three runs courtesy of wild pitches or passed balls in the later frames.

Mitchell will next host Eastern Nazarene College on Friday, March 13 at 3:30 p.m.
