Mariners Outlast Nighthawks
BROOKLINE, MASS. - The Mitchell College men's basketball team earned an NECC road win, as they defeated Newbury College by a score of 68-53 today at Hellenic College. The Nighthawks failed to capitalize in the second half, allowing the Mariners to pull away with the victory.
In the first half, Mitchell's Eric Murray (Bridgeport, CT/Bassick) led all scorers with 12 points doing just enough to give the Mariners a five point lead going into the break. The teams looked to be evenly matched, as the quick tempo of the game during the first 20 minutes saw the Mariners commit nine turnovers, while adding five steals and the Nighthawks surrender 11 turnovers of their own along with six steals. Newbury saw a consistent performance from Kevin Cleveland (Lynn, MA) as he recorded six points and five rebounds in the first half alone.
The Mariners turned up their game in the second half as Mike DePaolo (Asbury, NJ/North Hunterdon) and Jenel Russell (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) recorded 14 and 12 points, respectively. As a team, Mitchell turned the ball over only four times after the break while forcing seven turnovers from the Nighthawks. The Mariners were also 12-13 from the free-throw line to seal the win down the stretch.
Cleveland added an additional six points in the second half to finish with 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Teammates Walky Magloire (Waltham, MA/Waltham) and Paul Beckford Jr. (Somerville, MA/Somerville) played well for Newbury as Magloire recorded 15 points on the game and Beckford ripped down ten rebounds, seven on the defensive end of the floor.
Mitchell travels to Lesley University on Tuesday, February 3rd for a 7:00 pm tip-off.
