Bio

Chad Johnson enters his second season as head coach of the Mitchell College men's and women's cross country programs in 2020-21.

In his first year leading the program, Johnson guided the Mariners to a pair of fourth-place finishes at the New England Collegiate Conference Championship. Four of his runners earned all-conference recognition, with Evan Carney and John Mateo landing on first team while Aizhane Glenn and Grace Burns earning spots on second team. It marked the first time in school history that a pair of women's runners achieved all-conference status in the same season. Carney also went on to race in the NCAA Regionals in November, becoming the first Mitchell runner to compete at the event since 2012.

Johnson, who made his collegiate head coaching debut with the Mariners last fall, is the programs' fifth coach in Mitchell’s Division III era. Prior to joining the Mariners he was a high school cross country coach for 18 years, including the last 13 at Norwich Free Academy.

A standout runner for NFA as a student-athlete, Johnson took over the reins at his alma mater in 2006 and built one of top boys cross country programs in the area. During his tenure the Wildcats won nine conference championships and amassed a record of 123-6, and for three years in a row he was named Coach of the Year (2009-11) by The Day. He also had numerous athletes go on to compete at the collegiate level.

Prior to taking the position at NFA, Johnson served as head coach of the boys and girls cross country programs at Lyman Memorial High School from 2001-05. In 2003 he led the Bulldogs to a state class SS championship and was named Coach of the Year by The Bulletin.

Johnson began his coaching career in 1999 as an assistant outdoor track and field coach at NFA. Over his 16 years in the position the boys and girls teams won eight state championships, and in 2009 he was named the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year. He also acted as the head boys and girls indoor track coach from 2010-14. The girls program won the 2013 state indoor track championship and the girls sprint medley relay team finished ranked second in the U.S.

Johnson has been involved in the sports of cross country and track and field his entire life. He was an ECC, Class LL and State Open champion in his days running for NFA, winning back-to-back State Open cross country titles in 1991 and 1992. He went on to attend the University of Connecticut on an athletic scholarship and was a varsity member of the cross country and indoor/outdoor track and field squads.

Johnson has been a certified teacher in Connecticut for 20 years. He spent five years as a physical education and health teacher in Lebanon, Conn., before returning to NFA in 2004. As a science teacher at NFA he has created a kinesiology curriculum from the ground up. The program—one of very few high school level kinesiology programs in the country—covers topics including athletic training, metabolism, motor learning, exercise physiology, biomechanics and nutrition.

A native of Franklin, Conn., Johnson was recently inducted into both the NFA and City of Norwich Sports Halls of Fame. He also competes as a master’s athlete, and in 2016 he won Connecticut USATF Master’s Championships at distances of 5K, four miles and the half marathon.

Johnson holds undergraduate degrees in exercise science from the University of Connecticut and physical education from Eastern Connecticut State University. He also earned a master’s degree in secondary education science from ECSU.

Meet The Coach
Tim Hoch

Tim Hoch was hired as head coach of the Mitchell College men’s and women’s cross country programs in July 2023.

Hoch will make his collegiate head coaching debut with the Mariners. A runner at both the high school and collegiate level, Hoch spent the 2013 season running cross country as a student-athlete at Mitchell College.

“I’m hoping to bring a positive and supportive approach, implement individualized training plans, team building activities, and a strong emphasis on goal setting and boosting the cross country program for years to come,” Hoch said in a statement.

During his lone season with the Mariners, Hoch competed in all eight events and led the team at one event. He finished 13th at the Wesleyan Invitational and led the team at the Elms Invitational where he placed 58th overall. A one-time NECC Rookie of the Week that season, Hoch recorded his fastest time on an 8k course at the Connecticut College Invitational. While at Mitchell, he was also a member of the men’s basketball program for one year.

“I’m thrilled that Tim Hoch has agreed to be our new men’s and women’s cross country coach and confident that he will bring the same passion and work ethic directing this program as he did when he was a student athlete,” commented Associate Athletic Director and former cross country head coach, Todd Peretz. “Tim’s personality and communication skills will help him to guide and mentor our men and women while also being a valuable tool in the recruiting process.”

Following his year at Mitchell, Hoch was a three year letterwinner on the men’s basketball team at SUNY Maritime College, where he was one of just two Privateers to start in all 25 of the team’s games during his senior season, and was second on the team in scoring with 374 points. After obtaining his BA in Global Business at Maritime, Hoch went on to earn an MA in Leadership/Management from Waldorf University.

A native of Fishers Island, N.Y., Hoch has also served as head coach of the boys’ basketball team at Fishers Island School. In this role he led and managed the high school basketball program and played a pivotal role in developing student-athletes both on and off the court. As the head coach, he designed and implemented practice plans, developed game strategies, and provided skill instruction to players.

Hoch currently resides in Waterford, Connecticut.
