Stokes Named NECC Player of the Week
MANSFIELD, Mass. – Mitchell College senior Alfonzo Stokes (Bloomfield, Conn.) was named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week for the sport of men's basketball, as announced by the league on Monday morning. It marks the third time this season that Stokes has earned Player of the Week honors.
Stokes averaged a team-high 19 points per game, leading the Mitchell College men's basketball team to a 2-0 record on the week, their fourth and fifth victories in a row. Stokes also averaged seven rebounds per game on the week, as Mitchell remained unbeaten both at home and in conference play. After beginning the week by pouring in 21 points and grabbing six rebounds in a 64-52 win over the Pratt Institute, the senior guard scored 17 points as Mitchell dispatched of conference foe Eastern Nazarene College 98-84.
With 2:37 remaining against the Lions, Stokes drove to the basket and connected on a layup, reaching the 1,000 career point milestone. Stokes, who also added eight rebounds against NEC, became just the sixth Mitchell men's player to reach the 1,000 career points point in the program's Division III era.
The Mariners (15-3 overall, 3-0 NECC) return to action on Thursday, February 2nd, at home in a non-conference game against Purchase College at 6:00 pm.
