McLean Earns All-Conference Honors at MASCAC Championship
GROTON, Conn. -- Mitchell College finished in fifth place at the 2022 MASCAC Men's Golf Championship on Monday afternoon at Shennecossett Country Club in Groton, Connecticut.
The Mariners shot 671 as a team across the two day event, 10 strokes behind fourth place New England College. For the second consecutive year, Salem State University claimed the team title, battling through a second day of windy and chilly conditions to finish with a score of 628 (+35), four strokes better than second place Springfield College, who finished at 632 (+33). Westfield State (647) and New England College (661) were third and fourth respectively.
Mitchell senior Shamus McLean delivered a standout round on Monday, finishing with an even-par score of 71, good for the top individual round score over the two day tournament. This performance helped McLean bounce back after a difficult Sunday and finish tied for fifth (157). For his efforts, McLean was named to the All-MASCAC First Team. McLean was a second-team all conference selection in 2021.
Ryan King and Jaxon Hinshaw finished in the top 20, with King carding an 82 Monday and finishing 19th (170), while Hinshaw was right behind him by a stroke in 20th overall, after shooting an 86 on the second day (171).
Just two strokes back from Hinshaw was Jack Hayes, who improved by three strokes from Sunday to Monday, finishing tied for 21st with a two day total of 173. Micheal Thompson rounded out the scoring for the Mariners, ending with a two day total of 219.
Salem State senior Brian Cannata took home medalist honors, firing a two-over-par round of 73 on Monday, and finishing with a total score of 145. For his efforts, Cannata was named MASCAC Player of the Year. Aidan McBride of Springfield College finished six strokes back and was runner-up (151), while Westfield State's Brandon Smith was right on his heels in third place (153).
New England College freshman Graham Hassan carded a two-day total of 169, earning MASCAC Rookie of the Year, honors, while Salem State head coach James O'Reilly was named BSN Sports Coach of the Year.
Mitchell will be back at Shennecossett on Thursday, October 6th, hosting the Mitchell Invite III.
