Men's Tennis Blanked at Regis
WESTON, Mass. – In a rematch of the past two New England Collegiate Conference Championship matches, Regis College swept visiting Mitchell College, 9-0, in NECC men's tennis action on Thursday afternoon.
The Pride improved to 5-5 overall and 2-0 in the NECC, while Mitchell dropped to 1-1 and 0-1 in league matches.
The Crimson and Gold have now won 20-straight regular season NECC matches dating back to April 3, 2012, an 8-1 setback to Mitchell in New London, Conn.
Regis made quick work of the Mariners in doubles play to take a 3-0 lead. NECC and Co-ECAC Player of the Week Michael Beluch teamed with Jarid Polley to post an 8-2 win over Zachary Simmons and Graham Cavanaugh at the top doubles spot. The Pride won both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles by matching scores of 8-1 as Andy White and Jeremy Morgenbesser won at No. 2 doubles and Jeff Parrish and Austin Nace were victorious at No. 3.
In singles play, Beluch defeated Simmons 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Morgenbesser defeated Cavanaugh at the No. 2 spot, 6-0, 6-2. Jarid Polley grabbed his second point of the day with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles over Adam Diaz. Jeff Parrish avoided a third set tie-break as he won at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 7-5 against Michael Berman, and the Pride's Nick Hildreth defeated Randy Coons 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
After dropping the first set of his No. 4 singles matchup 6-4 against Orson Sinclair, Andy White rebounded in the second set to win 6-4 and force a third game. White fought off a pair of match points when he was down 7-9 and 9-10 in the third set tie-break before battling back for a 13-11 set win to help the Pride to a 9-0 sweep.
The Pride are right back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Newbury College at 3:30 p.m. in a NECC contest. Mitchell will try and rebound tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. in a match at Lesley University.
