Men's Tennis Blanks Lesley 9-0
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 win over Lesley University on Friday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at the Mack Tennis Courts.
The Mariners dropped a combined three games in the doubles portion before rolling to straight set wins in all six singles matches. Mitchell evened its conference record at 3-3 on the season while Lesley dropped to 0-6.
Zachary Simmons and Graham Cavanaugh picked up an 8-1 win over Harrison Sidell and Trevor Martin at No. 1 doubles. The duo of Orson Sinclair and Adam Diaz shut out Chris Hunt and Billy Baker at the No. 2 spot by an 8-0 final, and Chris McKeon and Randy Coons topped Jack Tortorici and Aqib Shah by a score of 8-2 at No. 3.
The Mariners carried the momentum into singles play, as no player lost more than three games in their match. Simmons bested Sidell at the top spot by finals of 6-0, 6-1, and Cavanaugh picked up a win over Shah at No. 2 by finals of 6-1, 6-2. Diaz and Sinclair won at the No. 3 and 4 spots, respectively, by identical scores of 6-0, 6-1 over Martin and Baker. Michael Berman topped Hunt 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 while Coons didn't drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Tortorici at No. 6.
Mitchell (5-3 overall) will next host Wheelock College on Saturday, April 12 at noon. Lesley (0-8 overall) returns to action at Wheelock on Sunday, April 13 at 11 a.m.
