Mitchell Sailing Hosts Inaugural Thames River Regatta
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College sailing team hosted
Connecticut College and Coast Guard at the inaugural Thames River
Regatta on Thursday afternoon off the docks of the Mitchell College
Sailing Center.
With the threat of heavy winds and thunderstorms looming--but never
materializing--the three teams all sailed short courses with a
rotation of skipper and crew after each race. Conn College
dominated the racing with five first-place finishes out of six
races. Coast Guard, which racked up five second-place
finishes at the event, placed second overall. Mitchell
finished third but took home a first-place finish in one race.
The Camels, who took the Thames River Trophy back to their
campus, were led by skipper IG Schottlaender with crew Mae Lortie
in A Division, and skipper Lindsey Press with crew Lucy Wallace in
B Division.
The lone race that wasn't won by Conn College was captured by the
Mariners. Skipper Alex Hering with
crew Lindsay
Ware took first place in the fourth race of the afternoon.
After the race the teams ate together, socialized, and then
with appreciative thanks to the hosts, headed back to their
respective New London campuses.
"All in all, it was a great success," said Mitchell head coach Bill
Furgueson. "I'd like to thank both Conn College and Coast Guard for
taking part in this event, and hopefully it can grow
and become an annual tradition."
