SOFTBALL SWEEPS FUTURE NECC FOE WHEELOCK, BORDONARO HITS 2-RUN HOMER TO END GAME 2
NEW LONDON, CT -- Mitchell College hosted future New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opponent Wheelock College Saturday afternoon. The Pequots won game one 5-2 after seven rounds and took game two after six innings, 12-3. The win moves Mitchell to 8-13 and drops Wheelock to 4-12 this season.
Game one got off to slow start with two rain delays. The Pequots scored their five runs off of six hits in the win. Mitchell's defense turned a double play in the fourth and held the Wildcats scoreless until the fifth inning. Wheelock scored their pair of runs off of five hits and captured five stolen bases.
Sophomore catcher Sarah Krolikowski (Bristol, CT) turned a solid performance in game one behind the plate and at bat. Krolikowski went two for three in game one and drove in two runs in the fifth with a double. Junior short stop Liz Roy (Jewett City, CT) also went two for three and opened the fourth inning with a double. Senior pitcher Catie Aleman (East Haddam, CT) walked four, struck out five and gave up just one earned run.
Junior pitcher Stacy Siedner (Pembroke, NH) had the hottest for the Wildcats, turning in a double and two singles to finish three for four. On the mound she struck out four and gave up two earned runs in the loss.
In game two, freshman center fielder Jen Bordonaro (Winsted, CT) batted two for three with a two-run walk-off homer to give the Pequots a nine run lead and end the game after six innings. Bordonaro also attacked the base paths, capturing three stolen bases. Roy went three for four with a triple and three RBI's. Freshman second baseman Melanie Miela (Lebanon, CT) was two for four at the plate with a double. Aleman pitched all six innings for the Pequots with one strike out, eight walks and gave only four hits and one earned run.
Freshman left fielder Sarah Novak (Needham, MA) batted one for two with an RBI. Sophomore catcher Erin Godfrey (Millbury, MA) went one for two with a single and junior third baseman Stacey Seidner (Pembroke, NH) finished one for three. Freshman Nicole Zina (Bristol, RI) pitched all six innings for the Wildcats and gave up 11 earned runs on 11 hits, struck out two and walked 11.
Mitchell will host Albertus Magnus College on Monday, April 14th for a 3:30 p.m. start. Wheelock will travel to Newbury College for a double header on Sunday, April 13th starting at 2:30 p.m.
