Elms Sweeps Softball Doubleheader
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College softball team fell in both games of an NECC doubleheader this afternoon on the Mitchell College campus, and the scores were 8-6 and 6-5. Sara Krolikowski (Bristol, Conn.) and Stacey Suplicki (New London, Conn.) had strong offensive performances on the day, but the Blazers came away with two wins.
Mitchell jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game one, and the inning was highlighted by a single by Liz Roy (Jewett City, Conn.) and a solo home run by Krolikowski. Kristina Torres (Groton, Conn.) rolled through the first four innings without giving up a run and struck out eight Elms' batters.
The Blazers put together two rallies in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-4 advantage into the seventh inning. In these innings, Courtney Hampton (Westfield, Mass.) had two singles and scored two runs, and Destinee Meeker (Bantam, Conn.) hit a two-RBI homer.
The Mariners scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but fell just short with the final score being 8-6. Suplicki drove in a run on a double, and Krolikowski and Lindsey Donelin (Niantic, Conn.) both singled.
Torres went the distance and gave up seven earned runs and struck out 12, while Andrea Ramsdell (Garnder, Mass.) picked up the win for Elms going seven innings and giving up four earned runs and seven hits.
In game two, Krolikowski and Suplicki were again solid at the plate, as they combined for 5-for-7 hitting with 3 runs, two RBI, and a homer. The game was a back and forth battle, and the score was tied at five going in the seventh inning when neither team could score the go-ahead run. In the eighth inning, Elms was able to squeak out a run on a fielder's choice play and an error, and then they held on in the bottom of the eighth for the win.
For Elms, Alison McBride (East Providence, R.I.) went 3-for-8 on the day with two runs, while Meeker went 2-for-7 with four RBI and a homer.
Hampton picked up the win on the mound for Elms as she pitched all eight innings and gave up five runs on nine hits, while Marissa Thomas (New London, Conn.) took the loss while yielding three earned runs on eight hits.
Mitchell is now 6-11-1 overall and 3-2-1 in NECC play, and they are back on the diamond on Tuesday, April 7th when they host St. Joseph College at 3:00 pm.
