Softball Sweeps Wheelock College in NECC Doubleheader
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College softball team swept the conference doubleheader with Wheelock this afternoon on a day when the two Mariner pitchers were dominant. Freshman Kristina Torres (Groton, Conn.) picked up the win in the first game, as she went the distance and gave up only two hits and struck out six. Marissa Thomas (New London, Conn.) was nearly as good in game two, as she only allowed three hits and one run in six innings of work. Mitchell won the first game 2-0, and the second game was stopped in the sixth inning due to the run rule with the home team winning 9-1.
In game one, the Mariners would only need two runs to secure the victory, and they scored first in the bottom of the first inning. Nikki Hoxie (Winsted, Conn.) singled, and Liz Roy (Jewett City, Conn.) picked up an RBI as she knocked in the run. Mitchell would then score their only other run in the bottom of the fifth inning on singles by Lindsey Donelin (Niantic, Conn.) and Roy.
In the second game, Mitchell was able to generate much more offense, while the defense and pitching was nearly flawless. Donelin went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Hoxie also went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Stacey Suplicki (New London, Conn.) went 2-for-3 and knocked in two runs while also playing error-free ball at her shortshop position.
Nicole Perullo (Revere, Mass.) and Stacy Seidner (Pembroke, N.H.) each had two hits on the day for the Wildcats of Wheelock College.
The wins bring Mitchell's overall record to 8-13-1 and 5-2-1 in NECC play, and the squad is back in action on Wednesday, April 15th when they travel to Bay Path College.
