Four Softball Players Earn NECC Honors
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Four members of the Mitchell College
softball team were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference
(NECC) on Friday, as announced by Commissioner Del Malloy.
Sophomore Kristina Torres
was one of two pitchers to earn a spot on the NECC All-Conference
First Team while senior Sara
Krolikowski was named to the All-Conference Second Team as a
catcher. A pair of Mitchell infielders—sophomore Nikki Hoxie and
freshman Meghan
Burke—earned All-Conference honorable mention status. All
awards were determined by a vote of the conference head
coaches.
Torres leads the NECC in strikeouts with 134 in 108.2 innings and
has posted a 10-7 record in 17 starts this season. In conference
play she went 6-2 with a 2.47 ERA and held opposing lineups to .210
hitting, striking out 75 while walking only 18. Three of her five
shutouts also came during NECC play.
Krolikowski earned all-conference honors for the fourth time in her
stellar career. In 14 conference games she led the Mariners with a
.391 batting average and drove in 12 runs while scoring 11 times.
On the season she is batting a team-high .427 with 28 RBI and 22
runs scored. Krolikowski leads the team in RBI, doubles (8), homers
(4), total bases (58), slugging (.652) and on-base percentage
(.495).
Hoxie, a second baseman, started all 16 conference games and batted
.356 with 10 RBI and 16 runs scored. In 33 games she has batted a
career-high .372 and driven in 20 runs while leading the Mariners
in runs scored (32) and walks (20).
Burke hit .360 in 16 conference games and led the team with 17 RBI.
A third baseman who also logged time at shortstop, second base and
catcher, she has started all 33 games and is batting .304 with 27
RBI and 30 runs scored.
Mitchell (21-12, 12-4 NECC) qualified for the 2010 NECC Softball
Championship and advanced to the semifinals with a 13-0 victory
over Newbury College on May 4. The third-seeded Mariners will play
second-seeded Elms College in the first round of the
double-elimination tournament on Friday, May 7 at noon.
