CLERMONT, Fla. – The Mitchell College softball team split a pair of 2-1 finals at The Spring Games on Sunday, falling to Dominican University in the day's first game while topping Mount Mary University in the second.
The Mariners got solid pitching performances from both Katelyn Lipsky and Emily Reynolds. Lipsky yielded a pair of runs on eight hits and struck out six in the loss, while Reynolds tossed a two-hitter to earn her second win in as many days.
Madison Nicynski went 3-for-6 with two RBI to lead the Mariners at the plate.
Mitchell (2-2 overall) returns to action on Monday, March 7 with games against Otterbein University and Wheaton College at The Spring Games.
Game 1 – Dominican 2, Mitchell 1
Mitchell fell into a 2-0 hole in the third inning as the Stars hit up Lipsky for two runs on four hits. Lipsky did well to limit the damage, getting a strike out and two ground outs to strand two runners in scoring position.
The Mariners applied some pressure in the seventh inning to make it interesting. A leadoff single by Brooke Whitmarsh and a Dominican throwing error gave Mitchell runners at the corners with no outs. After an infield single by Nicynski cut the deficit in half, the Mariners loaded the bases with only one out. However, a stellar defensive play by third baseman Makayla Barnes ended the game, as she snagged a line drive and doubled the runner off third to seal the victory.
Game 2 – Mitchell 2, Mount Mary 1
The second game followed a similar story line—albeit with different results—as the Mariners jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third. Gemma Landry plated the game's first run and later scored on an RBI single by Nicynski.
Reynolds retired 12 of the first 13 batters she faced, with the only exception being a batter that reached via an error in the third. Mount Mary's first hit didn't come until the fifth, and the Blue Angels finally struck for a run in the sixth. In the seventh, Reynolds pitched around another error and secured the final two outs with the tying run on second base.
