Softball Sweeps NECC Weekly Awards
MANSFIELD, Mass. – Two members of the Mitchell College softball team were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday.
Freshman Gemma Landry was named both NECC Player and Rookie of the Week while sophomore Katelyn Lipsky was tabbed NECC Pitcher of the Week. The duo led the Mariners to a 4-0 record last week that included sweeps against Norwich University and Roger Williams University.
Landry turned in a monster week at the plate to earn honors for the first time this season. She batted .625 with four doubles, two homers and six RBI over the four games to set the tone from leadoff spot. She went 6-for-8 with four doubles, a homer and five RBI in the sweep of Norwich, hitting her first collegiate dinger in the opener while adding three doubles in the nightcap. She also homered at Roger Williams and finished with two hits in each game, giving her a team-high 10 for a week in which she slugged 1.250.
Lipsky earned pitching honors for the second time this season (March 14), going 2-0 with a 0.58 ERA in two starts last week. She struck out a career-high 11 batters in a 14-1 win over Norwich in which she allowed only three hits over 5.0 innings. She then recorded her first shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory at Roger Williams, scattering eight hits over 7.0 innings while fanning four.
Landry has played in all 14 games this season and is batting .457 with 10 RBI and team highs 17 runs scored, seven doubles and two home runs. Lipsky has made seven starts in the circle and boasts a 3-4 record with a 4.43 ERA, striking out a team-high 46 batters over 42.2 innings.
Mitchell (8-6 overall) will next host Nichols College on Wednesday, March 30 at 2:30 p.m.
