Softball Drops GNAC Tournament Opener to JWU
STANDISH, ME – The Mitchell College softball team dropped their opening game in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament on Friday night, falling to Johnson & Wales University 7-1 at Richard W. Bailey Field on the campus of Saint Joseph's College (ME).
Mady Lyons and Amanda Madigan had two hits apiece for the Wildcats, while Caroline Amorelli recorded a hit and an RBI.
The Wildcats scored a run off Mitchell starter Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) in the top of the first, then added three more in the third to jump out to a 4-0 lead. The Mariners answered with a run in the bottom of the third on a JWU error, but the Wildcats scored one in the sixth and two more in the seventh, pushinng the Wildcat's lead to 7-1.
Katelyn Lipsky (Plantsville, Conn.), Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.), and Madison Cole (Westbrook, ME) had hits for Mitchell, while Reynolds took the loss, surrendering five runs (two earned) in five innings of work.
Mady Lyons finished 2-4 with a triple, one RBI, and one run scored. Amanda Madigan added two hits, while Danielle Flloyd doubled, and Amorelli drove in one
Katie Scheid tossed a complete game for JWU, scattering three hits, striking out five.
The Mariners (16-19) will look to fight off elimination on Saturday, May 4th, when they play New England College at 11:00 am in Standish, ME.
