WBB Sweeps Final Weekly Awards
MANSFIELD, Mass. -- Two members of the Mitchell College women's basketball team were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday.
Senior guard Dede Stevenson (Hartford, Conn.) was named NECC Player of the Week, while freshman Kyrsten Lucas (Manchester, M.D.) was tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week. Stevenson earned the honor for the second time this season (Jan. 16), while Lucas was recognized for the second week in a row (Feb. 13).
Stevenson 16 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 6.5 assists across two games, helping lead the Mitchell College women's basketball team to a 2-0 record on the week. Stevenson shot 40.7% from the floor, 37.5% from long range, and 80% from the free throw line, as the Mariners finished their regular season on a seven game winning streak. She began the week by notching a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double as Mitchell downed Fisher College 83-48. Stevenson followed that up on Saturday as the Mariners defeated NECC foe Eastern Nazarene College 96-61, scoring 17 points, dishing out nine assists, and grabbing six rebounds. With the win, the Mariners completed conference play undefeated for the first time.
Lucas, meanwhile, averaged 4.0 points and 2.5 rebounds on the week. She shot 50% from the floor, 50% from long range, and 50% from the free throw line, scoring five points off the bench against Fisher College then three points off the bench in the regular season finale against Eastern Nazarene College. She also grabbed four rebounds in the victory over Fisher.
The Mariners (16-9 overall, 6-0 NECC) will host a New England Collegiate Conference semifinal game on Thursday, February 22nd, at 6:00 pm.
