Santos Earns NEWBA Weekly Second Team Honors
NORTHHAMPTON, Mass. – For the fourth week this season, Mitchell College senior Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) was recognized by the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) for her play, this time earning Weekly Second Team honors, as announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon.
No stranger to NEWBA recognition, this marks the first appearance by Santos on the Weekly Second Team, having twice made First Team this season as well as earning NEWBA Player of the Week honors once. Each week during the regular season, the organization honors a player and rookie of the week from the region, and selects a five player first team along with a five player second team.
The senior forward turned in another strong week for the Mariners across two conference games, averaging 25 points, 15.5 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per contest. Santos also dished out 1.5 assists per game and shot 41.5% from the floor and 71.4% from the free throw line. She began the week by recording a double-double against the University of Saint Joseph, finishing with 25 points, 18 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. The conference's leading scorer and rebounder then followed that performance up with another double-double, this time on the road at Colby-Sawyer College, tallying 19 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 steals.
Entering the new week, Santos is averaging 24 points and 12.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 45.3% from the floor.
The Mariners (2-14, 0-8 GNAC) will return to the court on Tuesday, January 30th, when they host Anna Maria College in the first game of a GNAC doubleheader with tipoff scheduled for 5:00 pm.
