Santos Named to NEWBA Weekly Second-Team
NORTHHAMPTON, Mass. – For the fifth week this season, Mitchell College senior Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) was recognized by the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) for her play, this time earning Weekly Second Team honors, as announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon.
No stranger to NEWBA recognition, this marks the second appearance by Santos on the Weekly Second-Team, having twice made First-Team this season as well as earning NEWBA Player of the Week honors once. Each week during the regular season, the organization honors a player and rookie of the week from the region, and selects a five player first team along with a five player second team.
The senior forward continued her dominant play for the Mariners, averaging 28 points, 13 rebounds, 6.0 steals, and 4.5 assists per game across a pair of GNAC contests. Santos began the week by recording her first career triple-double in a conference win over Dean College, finishing with 34 points, 18 rebounds, and 10 steals. She added four assists against the Bulldogs, while shooting 44.4% from the floor and going 10-10 from the free throw line. Santos delivered for Mitchell once again on Saturday against Saint Joseph's College (ME), tallying 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and a pair of steals in the road conference showdown. She was once again efficient from the free-throw line against the Monks, going 8-11, and finished the week 18-21 from the stripe.
Entering the final week of the regular season, Santos is averaging 12.8 rebounds per game, tops in the GNAC, and sits second in scoring, averaging 24.4 points per contest.
The Mariners (4-16, 2-10 GNAC) will return to play on Wednesday, February 14th, when they take to the road to face Rivier University in a conference showdown slated to begin at 7:00 pm.
