Women’s Soccer 2023 Schedule Announced
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team recently released their schedule for the upcoming fall 2023 season. The Mariners, who open their schedule at home on Friday, September 1, against Fisher College, will be entering their first year as a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) after transitioning from the disbanded New England Collegiate Conference (NECC).
Mitchell will open up GNAC play in their third game of the season when they play host to Simmons University. The Mariners will play a total of 15 conference games, while their lone non-conference matches are home against Fisher College and Brooklyn College.
Marc Davis will enter his fifth season as the head coach of the Mariners after guiding the team to a 5-8-4 overall record in 2022. It marked the second consecutive year under Davis in which the team posted five wins, after having not won more than four games in a season since 2011. The eight losses were also the fewest in a full season for the program since 2011.
Despite suffering some losses due to graduation, the Mariners return a solid nucleolus, highlighted by junior goalkeeper Gemma Landry, who earned NECC All-Conference Team honors last season. During her sophomore campaign, Landry led the NECC with 170 saves and a .885 save percentage. Her 170 saves ranked ninth in the country at the Division III level, while her .885 save percentage ranked 14th, and she was 20th with 10 saves per game. For her performance, Landry was named to the 2022 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Women's All-Region II second team.
Mitchell will also return their top three scorers from last fall; sophomores Cassandra Roman and Taylor Bialowas, as well as senior Elon Johnson. Roman led the team with three goals in 2022, while Bialowas and Johnson each registered two goals and one assist on the season. They will be joined by junior Ileana Perez, who netted a pair of goals, as well as fellow junior Francesca Zamarripa, who dished out a team-high three assists last season.
The Mariners are scheduled to conclude their regular season on Tuesday, October 24, when they travel to Henniker, N.H., for a showdown with conference rival New England College.
