Women's Tennis Earns First Win
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's tennis team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday afternoon, posting a 6-3 victory over Albertus Magnus College at the Mitchell College Tennis Courts.
The Mariners (1-3 overall) started out the match by winning two of three doubles points and then sealed the victory with four points in singles action. Senior Amanda Resnick, junior Julie Embley and sophomore Mackenzie Flanagan each picked up wins in both singles and doubles.
Resnick and Flanagan teamed up to produce an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles while Embley and playing partner Jaimee Topkin picked up an 8-1 victory at the No. 2 spot. The duo of Gina D'Agostino and Haley Manson held off Jennifer Schmidt and Amanda Zullo by an 8-4 final to salvage a point for the Falcons (0-4 overall).
Mitchell claimed victories at the top three singles positions, all in straight sets. Flanagan was a winner by 6-0, 6-0 finals over Sandybell Anorga at the top spot, improving to 3-1 overall in singles play on the season. Both Resnick and Embley posted their first singles victories of the year, the former by 6-0, 6-1 finals over Na'Tasha Mesidor and the latter by finals of 6-2, 7-5 over Tykima Thompson.
Schmidt, a freshman, also earned her first career victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Rebecca Weinberger at the No. 5 position. The Falcons took points at No. 4 and 6 singles—both in 10-point tiebreakers in lieu of a third set—behind the play of Chantal Simmons and Malika Grant, respectively.
Mitchell will next host Becker College on Wednesday, September 28 at 4 p.m.
