Women's Tennis Earns First Win at Newbury
The Mitchell College women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Thursday by a 5-4 final at Newbury College.
Sophomore Jennifer Schmidt led the way for the Mariners as the only player to win both singles and doubles matches.
In singles play, the teams would finish tied at 3-3 heading into doubles, setting up an exciting finish down the stretch. The Nighthawks won at the top three singles spots, but the Mariners battled to victories at the bottom three positions. Schmidt powered past Newbury's Hazal Gammad, 6-4, 6-1 while teammate Anysia Lombardo went on to defeat Hannah Weiner 6-0, 6-0 to pull Mitchell even before doubles play.
The Nighthawks were led by Jennifer Swafford and Alexandra Derderian in singles play, who defeated their opponents 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-3 respectively.
Heading into doubles play and the scored tied, the final point of the day came down to the number two doubles spot in which Schmidt and teammate Alexa Litwak snuck past Newbury's Julie MacLeod and Gammad, 8-4, to seal the win for Mitchell.
Newbury fell to 2-4 with the loss while Mitchell improved to 1-3 (1-1 NECC) on the year.
The Mariners will next host Lesley University on Saturday, September 22 at noon.
