Newbury Hands Women's Tennis a 7-2 Loss
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to Newbury College in New England Collegiate Conference action on Thursday afternoon at the Mitchell Tennis Courts.
The win was crucial for Newbury (5-8 overall, 3-5 NECC), which climbed into a tie for fourth place with Mitchell (3-7 overall, 3-5 NECC) in the conference standings. The top four teams at the end of the regular season will qualify for the 2012 NECC Women's Tennis Championship.
The Nighthawks began the match by securing two points in doubles play. Newbury's Jennifer Swafford and Sarah Harris came away with a convincing 8-2 win at the No. 1 spot while teammates Alexandra Derderian and Julie MacLeod followed suit at No. 2 by an 8-4 final. The duo of Dominique Lacroix and Chelsea Arpin kept the Mariners in the mix with an 8-3 win at the No. 3 position.
Newbury won five of the six singles matches to secure the victory. Swafford, Harris and Derderian all won in straight sets at the No. 1-3 positions, respectively, while MacLeod bounced back from a first set defeat to down Jennifer Schmidt by scores of 0-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-2). Hazel Gammad also earned a point at No. 5 singles, defeating Lacroix in straight sets.
Mitchell's lone highlight in singles play came from Arpin, who secured her second point of the match. She defeated Hannah Weiner by scores of 6-4, 6-2 to earn her first singles victory of the season.
Mitchell will next host Becker College on Friday, October 12 at 3 p.m.
