Women's Tennis Closes Season with Loss to Regis
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Regis College women's tennis team wrapped up the top seed in the upcoming New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship on Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 victory over Mitchell College on the final day of regular season play for each squad.
Regis improved to 11-1 overall and 9-1 in conference play. The Pride earned the right to host throughout the Championship, which begins with semifinals action on Wednesday, October 17. The top four teams in the NECC standings qualify for postseason play. Mitchell (3-9 overall, 3-7 NECC) entered the day tied with Newbury College for the fourth and final spot but slipped into fifth place with the loss.
The Pride took all three doubles points before sweeping every singles match in straight sets. Abigail Wehr and Jazz Hicks posted an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles and then went on to claim singles victories at the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively. Wehr defeated Carly Paterson 6-0, 6-4 while Hicks topped Alexa Litwak 6-1, 6-0.
Prior to the match, the Mariners honored Julie Embley, the lone senior who was playing in her final collegiate match.
