Women's Tennis Tops Albertus Magnus 8-1
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season by an 8-1 final over Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday afternoon at the Mack Tennis Courts.
The Mariners (1-1 overall) won all three doubles matches and went on to take all but one singles match to give Jillian Ortiz her first career victory as a women's tennis head coach.
The closest doubles match came at the No. 2 spot where Mitchell's Jenny Groman and Veyda McVey held on to defeat Kelsea Wildman and Sogona Sacko by an 8-6 margin. At the top spot, Laura Simmons and Samantha Ryan triumphed 8-3 over Zaida Velazco and Megan Thornton while Alexa Litwak and Lehayla Cruz blanked Renita Moore and Chelcie Roan by an 8-0 final at No. 3.
The Falcons' lone point came from Velzco at No. 1 singles. She lost the first set to Simmons but rebounded for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Ryan gutted out a tough singles win at the No. 2 spot against Wildman. She took the first set in a tiebreaker and went on to win by finals of 7-6 (10-8), 7-5 in the closest match of the day.
The rest of the Mariners won their singles matches in straight sets. McVey and Groman each picked up their first singles wins of their careers while Litwak and Dominique Lacroix both earned their first of the season.
Mitchell will next host Bay Path College on Saturday, September 13 at noon. Albertus Magnus returns to action at home against Brooklyn College on Saturday at noon.
