Women's Tennis Falls 8-1 to Lesley
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's tennis team opened New England Collegiate Conference play with an 8-1 loss to Lesley University on Saturday afternoon at the Mack Tennis Courts.
Lesley won all three doubles matches and then took five of six singles points to seal the victory. The Lynx improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in NECC play while Mitchell dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Lesley won four singles matches in straight sets, with Caroline Kiddie setting the tone at the No. 1 spot. She bested Laura Simmons by finals of 6-4, 6-4. Carlyn Barker and Meghann Toomajian won at No. 3 and 5 singles, respectively, by identical 6-4, 6-2 scores, and Christyl Skelton earned a win at No. 6 by finals of 6-1, 6-2.
Lesley's Carissa Iverson fought back for a win over Samantha Ryan at No. 2 singles. Iverson dropped the opening set 7-5 but shut out Ryan in the second, and she pulled out the win 10-5 in a 10-point tiebreaker that decided the match.
Mitchell's lone point came from junior Veyda McVey against Victoria Bunker at the No. 4 spot. After losing the first set, McVey bounced back in the second to tie things up, and in lieu of a third set the two played a 10-point tiebreaker. McVey came out on top in the tiebreaker, winning 10-7 to secure her second singles win of the season.
Mitchell will next host Bay Path College on Monday, September 22 at 3:30 p.m. in a match that was rescheduled from September 13. Lesley returns to action at home against Bay Path on Wednesday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m.
