Women's Tennis Drops NECC Contest to Becker
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Becker College took all but one singles match in an 8-1 victory over Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference women's tennis action at the Mack Tennis Courts.
The Hawks improved to 4-4 overall and 3-0 in league play. The Mariners dropped to 2-2 overall and suffered their first NECC setback of the season (2-1).
Becker coasted through doubles play and held a commanding 3-0 advantage entering the singles portion of competition. Jennifer Lord and Livia Smith won by an 8-4 final at No. 1 doubles against the Mitchell duo of Samantha Ryan and Heather Schall. The remaining two doubles matches were not as close as Jacqueline Andrade and Emily Wodell won by an 8-1 final and Jessica Leger and Kerry Saltvick triumphed by an 8-2 tally.
Becker's five singles victories all came in straight sets. Andrade lost only three total games at No. 2 and Smith won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3. Leger won both her sets by 6-1 scores at No. 4 while Dana Mahan and Wodell triumphed by 6-1, 6-3 finals at No. 5 and 6, respectively. The lone bright spot for the Mariners was Ryan at No. 1, where she won the first set 6-4 before her opponent retired from the match.
Mitchell will next play at Regis College on Wednesday, September 23 at 4:30 p.m. Becker returns to action at home against Anna Maria College on Monday, September 21 at 3 p.m.
