Women's Tennis Clipped at Becker
LEICESTER, Mass. - The Mitchell College women's tennis team returned to New England Collegiate Conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Becker College but came up on the wrong end of a 7-2 final.
The win guaranteed Becker (7-7 overall, 6-2 NECC) the second seed in the upcoming NECC Championship. Mitchell dropped to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the league.
The Hawks started the match by securing two of the three doubles points. The No. 3 team of Dana Mahan and Kerry Saltvick defeated Brittany Fuller and Danielle Autieri, 8-2. At No. 2, the tandem of Jacqueline Andrade and Emily Wodell topped Dominique Lacroix and Lehayla Cruz, 8-4.
The Mariners' lone doubles point came at No. 1 as Samantha Ryan and Heather Schall defeated Jennifer Lord and Livia Smith, 8-1.
During singles, Becker got two quick points when Saltvick rolled past Autieri, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 and Smith triumphed at No. 3, 6-4, 6-0 over Lacroix. Andrade secured the team victory by taking down Schall 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.
The Hawks picked up two more points to finish off the match. Woddell won the first set tiebreaker on her way to a 7-6, 6-1 win over Fuller at No. 5. Lord bounced back from not winning a game in the first set to take her No. 1 singles match against Ryan 0-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Mitchell's lone win in singles came at No. 4 where Cruz topped Mahan, 6-4, 0-6, 6-1.
Mitchell will next host Regis College on Wednesday, October 7 at 3 p.m.
