Tennis Gets Back on the Winning Track vs. Newbury
WESTON, Mass. – Mitchell College claimed a season sweep of Newbury College with a 6-3 victory on Wednesday night in a New England Collegiate Conference women's tennis match played at Regis College.
Newbury fell to 0-9 overall and 0-9 in conference play while Mitchell improved to 3-7 overall and 3-5 in the NECC. The Mariners defeated the Nighthawks earlier this season by the same margin.
Mitchell grabbed the early by taking two of three doubles contests. Sophomore Lehayla Cruz and freshman Brittany Fuller won No. 3 doubles against Amonique Wint and Edvana Goncalves by an 8-2 final. Sharifah Mukasa and Destiny Spears made seniors Dominique Lacroix and Veyda McVey work, taking them to 13 games before the Mariners pulled out the 8-5 win.
Jessica Russo and Katelynne Bazile avoided the sweep at No. 1 doubles. The Nighthawks duo knocked off senior Samantha Ryan and junior Heather Schall with an 8-4 win.
In the singles portion of the evening, the Mariners grabbed victories at No. 5 and 6 singles. McVey knocked off Goncalves in two sets (6-0, 6-0) while Fuller pulled out a win against Wint (6-1, 6-0). Ryan bounced back to pick up a win at No. 1 (6-3, 6-0) and Cruz triumphed at No. 4 (6-3, 6-1) to round out the evening.
Spears earned the first singles victory of her collegiate career with a two-set victory, tiring out Lacroix at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-3). At the No. 2 spot, Russo won in straight sets (6-2, 6-0) to earn the third singles victory of her career.
