Brown Named GNAC Women’s Volleyball Rookie of the Week
WINTHROP, Mass. – Mitchell College junior Bliss Brown (Rainbow City, Ala.) was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week for the sport of women's volleyball, as announced by the conference on Tuesday afternoon.
The first year setter played a key role on Saturday for the Mariners, who swept a tri-match against Anna Maria College and Curry College. It marked the first time since 2008 that the Mariners have begun their season with two consecutive victories, and the first time a Mitchell student athlete has been recognized with a weekly award by the GNAC since the College became an official member in July.
Across two games, Brown has handed out 44 assists, tops on the team and ninth most in the conference. She has also tallied 20 digs, 11 kills, and her 5.50 assists per set is fourth most in the GNAC as of Tuesday afternoon.
In the Mariners first match of the season, Brown finished with 19 assists, seven digs, and five kills, as Mitchell rolled to a straight set victory over the AMCATS. Immediately after, she posted a double-double with 25 assists and 13 digs during a marathon five set win against the Colonels. In the game against Curry, Brown also added six kills.
The Mariners (2-0) return to action on Tuesday, September 5, traveling to face Rhode Island College in a non-conference match slated to begin at 6:00 pm.
