Meet The Coach
Todd Peretz

Todd Peretz is entering his 25th season as head coach of the Mitchell College men’s basketball program in 2023-24.

Peretz has built Mitchell into a perennial contender, as the program makes the transition from the New England Collegiate Conference into the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). Prior to their move into the GNAC, the Mariners made four straight appearances in the NECC title game, resulting in three championships and NCAA berths. During that span, Peretz has three times been named the NECC Coach of the Year (2023, 2022, 2019).

Last season, Peretz elevated the program to new heights, guiding the Mariners to their second consecutive conference title with an overall record of 23-5. The 23 wins were the most in a single season during the Division III era of the program, and the team went undefeated at home for their time with a record of 15-0 at the Yarnall Athletic Center. The Mariners were dominant in conference play, going 6-0 to earn the top-seed in the NECC tournament before taking down third-seeded New England College to earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. On the national stage, Mitchell squared off against 11th ranked Johns Hopkins University, a team that went on to advance to the Sweet 16.

In the 2021-22 season, Mitchell claimed its third NECC title and finished with an overall record of 17-11. The Mariners went 4-2 in league play and earned the second seed for the NECC Championship, upending top-seeded Eastern Nazarene College on the road to nab an automatic NCAA berth. On the national stage, Mitchell faced top-ranked Randolph-Macon College in the opening round of the NCAA Championship, a team that went on to win the national title.

In 2019 Mitchell went 10-6 in league play to earn the fourth seed in the tournament and upset top-seeded New England College to reach the finals. The Mariners then won the championship on their home floor to become the lowest seed to ever win the conference tournament, earning a date against national runner-up Swarthmore College in the first round of the NCAA Championship. In 2020, Mitchell fell just short of defending its title, losing at NEC on a buzzer beater.

In 2014 Peretz led the Mariners to 19-8 record and the program's first-ever NECC title. Mitchell tied for first place in the NECC regular season standings with a 12-4 mark and defeated Elms College in the NECC Championship title game by a 72-71 final. The Mariners earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship and made their postseason debut against national runner-up Williams College.

Several players have enjoyed stellar careers under Peretz's tutelage. Last season the Mariners produced a pair of all-conference selections, and in 2019 the program yielded the NECC Player of the Year. It marked the third time in the league's 13-year history that the top award was bestowed on a Mitchell player (2013, 2014, 2019). Peretz has also proven to have an eye for young talent, as the program has recruited the NECC Rookie of the Year a record four times (2011, 2012, 2013, 2016).

Peretz enjoyed many successful campaigns while directing the men’s program through its transformation from a junior college to a NCAA Division III institution. In 2002 he led Mitchell to a New England Championship and national tournament appearance and was named Region and District Coach of the Year.

Peretz earned his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Connecticut State University in general studies with a concentration in physical education. He played collegiately at Rhode Island College after graduating from East Lyme High School.

In addition to coaching basketball, Peretz coaches men's golf at Mitchell and spent eight years at the helm of the men's and women's cross country programs. He also serves as associate athletics director and an adjunct instructor at the college.

He currently resides in Waterford, CT with his wife, Denise, and son, Tyler.
