BASEBALL TAKES A PAIR FROM BARUCH, NOWAKOWSKI CYCLES IN GAME TWO
New London, CT- Mitchell College took both halves of a doubleheader with Baruch College today 9-3 and 19-5. Mitchell ups their record to 11-6 overall and 10-1 in the CUNYAC with the two wins. Baruch falls to 3-16 overall and 2-9 in CUNYAC play.
This two game set was a showcase for Mitchell junior shortstop Seth Nowakowski (Plainfield HS/Preston, CT). He went 1-for-3 with three runs batted in game one but saved the best for game two. In game two Nowakowski went 4-for-5 with nine runs batted in and hit for the cycle. He cleared the bases in each of the first three innings.
Nowakowski wasn't alone in the Pequots' offensive onslaught in the second game. Leadoff man senior second baseman Dan Lanoue (Cranston HS/Cranston, RI) went 4-for-6 and scored three times. Freshman left fielder Rob McHugh (Thomaston HS/Thomaston, CT) went 3-for-3 and also scored three times. Junior catcher Brian Hancock (Montville HS/Uncasville, CT) also delivered his first home run of the year, a grand slam, in Mitchell's nine run third inning.
Mitchell's pitchers had a good day as well. Game one starter, senior lefty Sal Messina (Wolcott HS/Prospect, CT) improved to 2-1 on the campaign with a complete game, 10 K performance, his second consecutive 10 plus strikeout performance. Game two starter southpaw Jeremy Chapman (Waterford HS/Oakdale, CT) stayed perfect on the season moving to 5-0 with his victory. Sophomore first baseman Joseph Valentin (DeWitt Clinton/Co-Op City, NY) went 4-for-7 with one RBI over the two games for the Bearcats.
Mitchell's next game will be Monday April 16th (weather permitting) against Newbury College with first pitch being at 3:00 PM. Baruch travels to King's Point for their next contest Tuesday April 17th at 4:00 PM. The two teams will play game three of this series at a later date at a time and site to be determined.
