BASEBALL SWEEPS STATEN ISLAND, STREAK EXTENDS TO FIVE
NEW LONDON, CT-- Mitchell College (9-5, 8-1 CUNYAC) completed a sweep of the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island (4-12, 2-4 CUNYAC) Sunday afternoon by taking both games of their doubleheader 9-8 and 13-1. The Pequots are in the midst of a five game winning streak.
Speaking of streaks, senior second baseman Dan Lanoue (Cranston HS/Cranston, RI) reached base for the ninth consecutive plate appearance (over three games) in game one. Lanoue went 9 for 12 (.750) in the 3 game series and drove in 4 runs and scored 8 times.
Game one started off rough for the Pequots as they fell behind 6-2 in the first three frames. They battled back to take the lead in the fifth with a five run barrage that knocked Dolphin starter Andrew DePaulo out of the game. After Staten Island tied it up at seven apiece, the bullpens came into play. The Dolphins would push home a run in the eighth against reliever Brian Hancock (Jr./Montville HS/Uncasville, CT) (1-0) when right fielder Matt Chatell (Bishop Hendricken HS/Coventry,RI) botched a fly ball. Chatell would redeem himself however in the bottom of the inning by driving in the game winning run with a single past the third baseman.
The second game provided less suspense the Pequots jumped ahead early 5-0 and piled it on with a seven run sixth in support of freshman lefty Jeremy Chapman (Waterford HS/Oakdale, CT) (4-0) who took a shutout into the ninth. The Dolphins would use three pitchers in the sixth and senior Sal Messina (Wolcott HS/Prospect, CT) hit his second home run in as many days.
In game one senior shortstop Bob Glennerster (St. Joseph by the Sea/Staten Island, NY) drove in three and swiped three bases. Freshman third baseman Devon DiCasoli (Moore Catholic/Staten Island, NY) went 5 for 8 in the doubleheader.
Mitchell's next game will be a home contest Wednesday April 11th against Johnson & Wales University at 3:30 PM. Staten Island will be in action again Monday April 9th against Kean University.
