BASEBALL TAKES TWO FROM YESHIVA ON SENIOR DAY
NEW LONDON, CT--Mitchell College took the first two of a three game series with Yeshiva, 10-2 and 15-1, on Senior Day Sunday afternoon. Mitchell improves to 16-8 overall and 13-3 in the CUNYAC with the two victories. The two losses drop Yeshiva to 1-10 overall and 0-8 in the CUNYAC.
The two games were the final home contests for exiting senior captains pitcher Rayallen Bergman (Oakdale, CT/Montville), second baseman Dan Lanoue (Cranston, RI/Cranston), and first baseman/pitcher Sal Messina (Prospect, CT/Wolcott). The seniors were recognized at the conclusion of game two with a small ceremony behind the plate.
Game one saw Mitchell jump on Yeshiva early putting up runs in four of the first five innings. Doing the damage was junior Seth Nowakowski (Preston, CT/Plainfield) and junior centerfielder Alex Hamlin (Intervale, NH/Kennett) who both knocked in three runs. Messina drove in two runs with a double in the fourth inning. He also went the distance giving up just two runs, striking out 11 (his fourth consecutive 10+ K game), and walking zero.
Game two was another showcase for Messina as he went 4-for-5 with his fifth home run of the season and five RBI's. Freshman right fielder Matt Chatell (Coventry, RI/Bishop Hendicken), junior third baseman Shawn Guiney (New London, CT/New London), and Nowakowski each drove in two runs. Late in the game, Bergman would make his first plate appearance of the season. Normally a pitcher, Bergman stepped in for Guiney and was abruptly plunked. He would score from first on a double by Nowakowski. Freshman starter Jeremy Chapman (Oakdale, CT/Waterford) upped his record to 6-1 on the season allowing just a single run while striking out a Pequot season high 14 with zero Yeshiva batters reaching base via a walk.
For the Maccabees, sophomore shortstop Max Gornish (St. Louis, MO/Block) went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one. In game two, senior leadoff hitter and center fielder Jeremy Simons (Chicago, IL/Ida Crown) went 3-for-4 and scored Yeshiva's lone run.
The two teams will meet again Tuesday May 1st at 7:30 PM at Taft HS in the Bronx to round out the three game series. Mitchell will finish out this year's CUNYAC schedule with their final match up on Wednesday at Westchester Community College against Baruch College at 4:00 PM.
