Baseball's Shamas Earns All-New England Honors
BABSON PARK, Mass. – The New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) announced the 2013 Division III All-New England Teams on Thursday, and Mitchell College freshman pitcher Tyler Shamas was one of the 52 players honored from the region.
Shamas was one of five pitchers named to the All-New England third team. He becomes the first Mitchell freshman to earn All-New England status and just the fourth overall, joining Jeremy Chapman (third team in 2010), John Apostolo (second team in 2011) and Jeff Perillo (third team in 2011).
Shamas enjoyed a stellar rookie season in which he went 9-1 overall and led the Mitchell staff with a 2.48 ERA. He was tabbed the New England Collegiate College (NECC) Pitcher and Rookie of the Year and was an all-conference first team selection. Shamas was one of two conference pitchers to go 6-0 in NECC play, recording a win against every conference team. The freshman led the league in strikeouts (30) and complete games (3) and ranked second in ERA (1.42). He also picked up a win and a save in the NECC Championship and was named to the all-tournament team.
The Mariners (23-15-1 overall) finished the season tied for first place in the NECC standings with a conference mark of 15-3. As the second seed in the NECC Championship, Mitchell battled to the title round before succumbing to Daniel Webster. The Mariners also earned a berth in the ECAC Division III New England Championship for the first time in program history.
