Baseball's Olszewski Earns Capital One Academic Honors
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College senior Kenneth Olszewski was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Baseball Team on Thursday, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Olszewski was one of 10 Division III players named to the first team in District 2, which is made up of all programs from the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island and West Virginia, along with the District of Columbia. First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Olszewski becomes the second student-athlete from Mitchell and the first from the baseball team to earn Capital One Academic All-District honors. Former men's tennis player Rocco Devona '13 earned the distinction in 2012. To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Olszewski, a criminal justice major with a 3.77 GPA, is batting a career- and team-high .402 this season with 26 RBI and 36 runs scored. He has played in all 32 games and made the majority of his 31 starts in left field. In 18 conference games he batted .507 and helped lead the Mariners to a first-place finish in the regular season standings.
Mitchell (28-4 overall) is the top seed in the 2015 New England Collegiate Conference Baseball Championship and will host the double-elimination tournament on May 8-10. The Mariners will open the tournament against fourth-seeded Becker College on Friday at 11 a.m.
