FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Mitchell College baseball team split a doubleheader with Saint John's University (Minn.) on Tuesday afternoon at the Cusic Classic, falling 7-4 before winning 8-7 in extra innings.
Kyle Hartenstein, Tyler Pina and Garet Griffin all homered in the doubleheader as the Mariners moved to 4-4 overall on the season.
Mitchell will next face Husson University at the RussMatt Invitational on Thursday, March 9 at 4 p.m.
Game 1 - Saint John's 7, Mitchell 4
Mitchell fell behind 3-0 early before vaulting into the lead with a four-run third inning. Hartenstein and Pina each slugged two-out, two-run homers in the frame, the first for each this season.
Saint John's scored two runs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead and never trailed again. The Mariners wasted a golden chance in the fourth after putting runners on second and third with no outs. However, SJU reliever Bennett Wiggins got an infield pop up and a ground ball double play to escape trouble.
Brian Ricker got the start for Mitchell and gave up five runs (two earned) on six hits in 2.2 innings.
Game 2 - Mitchell 8, Saint John's 7 (8 innings)
The Mariners scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to walk off with a split. Mitchell tied the game when Francis Prettitore drew a bases-loaded walk, and moments later a wild pitch scored Steven Pagan with the winning run.
Mitchell fell behind 3-0 before even picking up the bats. Pina plated a run in the bottom of the first with a ground out, and an RBI single by Hartenstein in the fourth made it a 4-2 contest.
The Mariners later trailed 6-2 before rallying for four runs to tie the game in the fifth. A sacrifice fly by Prettitore brought in the first run of the frame, but Griffin supplied the big blow with a two-out, three-run homer to tie the game.
Mitchell's bullpen kept SJU off the scoreboard in the sixth and the seventh. Brian Stanczuk came into the game and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, enducing a double play to keep the game tied.
Stanczuk picked up the win in relief, working a total of 1.2 innings and yielding one run on two hits.
