Baseball Slugs Past Husson
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Mitchell College baseball team posted a 10-1 victory over Husson University on Thursday afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational.
Mitchell starter Axel De Jesus blanked Husson for 7.0 innings en route to his second win of the season. He struck out seven batters and yielded only five hits before turning the ball over to the bullpen.
The Mariners spotted De Jesus single runs in each of the first three innings. Tyler Pina plated the run in the first with a ground out and Tristan Hurley added a sacrifice fly in the second. An RBI double by Garet Griffin put Mitchell on top 3-0 in the third.
Mitchell doubled the lead with a three-run sixth inning, a rally that was sparked by a two-out walk drawn by Steven Gonzalez. A walk to Hurley then put two runners on base, and Kyle Hartenstein delivered a two-run double and later scored on a single by Rolando Marcano.
De Jesus didn't allow a runner past second base until the sixth, when Husson put two runners in scoring position with one out. He buckled down to get the next two batters to pop up in the infield, and the Mariners escaped with the 6-0 lead intact.
Mitchell added three more runs in the seventh courtesy of RBI doubles by Peter Abate and Hartenstein. Pina added a solo homer in the eighth--his second long ball of the season--to make it a 10-0 game.
Husson finally got on the scoreboard in the ninth inning courtesy of a leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly. Devin Robbins retired the final two batters he faced to close out the win.
Mitchell finished with 13 hits in the game, seven of which went for extra bases. Hartenstein and Griffin each doubled twice while Mike Jason doubled for his first career hit.
Mitchell (5-4 overall) will wrap up its Florida trip against Concordia College (Ill.) on Friday, March 10 at 1:15 p.m.
