HARTFORD, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Trinity College on Saturday afternoon, falling 14-3 in the opener before bouncing back for a 5-2 win in the nightcap.
Jakari Pellegrini pitched a complete game for the Mariners (9-7 overall) in his first collegiate start. He yielded two runs on four hits and struck out five batters over 7.0 innings.
Mitchell will next host Albertus Magnus College for a doubleheader on Sunday, March 26 at 1 p.m.
Game 1 – Trinity 14, Mitchell 3
Mitchell took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by Tyler Pina but saw things go south from there. Trinity answered back with five runs in the home half and put up another five runs in the fifth.
Mitchell starter Axel De Jesus lasted 2.2 innings and gave up six runs on five hits.
Game 2 – Mitchell 5, Trinity 2
Mitchell scored two runs in the second inning without the benefit of a hit. Trinity starter McLane Hill retired the first two batters in the frame before issuing five straight walks to force in both runs.
The Mariners loaded the bases with one out in the fifth and made it 3-0 on a ground ball by Markus Melendez. Trinity answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame as the Bantams hit up Pellegrini for a double and a triple.
Mitchell got the two runs back in the sixth, loading the bases with only one out before Francis Prettitore singled home a run. A ground ball by Pina plated another run and bumped the lead back to three at 5-2.
Pellegrini worked out of trouble in the seventh to wrap up the win. Trinity loaded the bases with one out to bring the potential winning run to the plate. However, Pellegrini quickly got two strikes on Johnny Stamatis before picking off the runner at first. He then settled on the batter and, two pitches later, caught the inside corner of the plate with a fastball to strike out Stamatis looking.
